Summer Challenge | Reveal Your Best Self
I'm at a time in my life, where I can feel the "tipping point" on the horizon... With my 1yr anniversary of Sage + Sparkle behind me and my 30th birthday later this year, it's the perfect time, to take a look back at where my legs haven't taken me and where I plan for them to take me in the future. Which is why I have partnered with Nair to share my story.
For those of you that don't know me personally, I think this is a perfect time for me to share how I ended up in New York. 8 year ago on July 20th, I made the decision to move to NYC... two weeks later I was living in Clinton Hill Brooklyn, on the edge of BedStuy in a very charming, but not so safe neighborhood. Before I fully get into the story, let me back up a bit. 10 years ago, I landed, at the time, my dream job working as a Retail Coordinator for a Children's clothing company, covering Northern California/Bay Area territory. I was 19 years old, still in college and had already landed my dream job! What are the odds right?!?
I worked there for about 2 years, visiting NYC twice for work conferences, knowing that one day, I would live there. Since I can remember, I have always wanted to live in NYC... even during the brief period in my life, when I wanted to be an actress/performer, I wanted to be on broadway or be a rockette, but then quickly realized I couldn't sing (there went my broadway dreams), and at only 5'3", being a rockette was pretty much impossible. Nevertheless, New York has always been the constant, when it came to my dreams and revealing my best self.
So like I said, I had landed my dream job, was living in San Francisco and balancing 22 units in school, coaching high school cheerleading, and work. Basically I never slept, but I was loving every minute of it!
July 20th, 2006 my plan quickly fast-tracked, when my roommate at the time told me she would be moving in August. I was at a crossroad. I could find a new apartment/roommate in San Francisco, or I could (eek!) move to New York now. Within days, I found an apartment online, in Brooklyn (It's important to note, that I had only been to NYC twice at this point and never off the island of Manhattan), but I wanted to be in New York so bad, that to me it didn't matter.
Long story short, I signed the lease, sight unseen and by August 3rd, 2006 I was living in New York! I'll share more about my first days/year in Brooklyn, at a later date... but, what I really wanted to focus on here was the fact that sometimes you may think you're reveling your best self, and at that moment, it may very well be. But we have to continuously strive for more. Strive to grow, strive to be and do better and not be afraid to take a risk . Whether that risk involves moving cross-country without knowing a soul, switching jobs, or applying to grad school. The reward always far out weights the risk.
And now, I have been living in New York 8 years (this August), working for an amazing designer for the past 7. And after countless promotions, hard work, and sacrifice, I truly feel like I have been reveling my best self. But I've never stopped asking myself... What's next? What can I do better? Which is why I have partnered with this campaign with Nair was so appealing to me.
