What to Wear to the Opera // Die Fledermaus

Saturday night I had my first experience at the opera.  My love and I went to The Met, to see an english production of the German opera, Die Fledermaus and I have to say it was everything I had always dreamed the opera would be, but also surprised me at the same time. Magically, enchanting, captivating... these are the words I would use to describe the experience, all of which I expected, but that part that surprised me what the fact that it was funny.

One of the best parts of going to opera, was the fact that we got to dress up.  I have been trying to be good this year, by saving money, so I decided it was best to shop my own closet, which lead me to this Alexia Admor dress, purchased back in December for a  holiday party. It was perfect.  Now being in NY,  anything goes... so there were woman in full ball gowns, sparkly oscar worthy pieces, and some in slacks and a sweater.  I fell right in the middle, leaning more towards the dressed up side, while not over doing it, which was exactly what I was going for. However, next time, I plan to try something like this - I mean, why not?!

The production we saw, was set in the late 19th century, on New Year's Eve, 1899.  Since it was in english, it was pretty easy to follow along, however in any language, I imagine the opera would be enjoyable. Die Fledermaus is centered around a masquerade ball, that eventually brings together all of the characters, in various disguises.  Adultery, jealously, revenge, all themes of a typically opera, were touched upon but in a way that was light-hearted, funny, and relatable.

I highly recommended Die Fledermaus, great for a first timer as well as an opera enthusiast.  Even if you go just for the orchestra, you won't be disappointed. From the very beginning, the music captivated me and by the end I was hooked.  This about sums up my feelings for the opera.  Can't wait for the next one....
