DIY Graduation Cap

When I found out that Jaydens school doesn’t do caps and gowns for their preschool graduations and that it’s more of a “moving on ceremony”, I knew I needed to make him a fun cap for him to wear for the occasion. Even though the graduation ceremony was virtual, that wasn’t stopping our plans.

This DIY graduation cap was super easy to make and you most likely have most the supplies you need at home. You’ll need cardboard, duct tape or clear packing tape, card stock paper (or you can even use thin cardboard for this, like a cereal box), paper and/or art supplies in your kids school colors, yarn or string of some sort and scissors.

Step by step how to:

  1. Measure your kids head and cut the card stock or thin cardboard to the size of their head. secure with clear packing tape or cover with duct tape. I used card stock and choose to cover the entire thing with white duct tape to make it more sturdy.

  2. Cut out a square pieces of cardboard for the top. I also covered this with white duct tape, but you could paint or color, depending on how you want your finished product to look.

  3. Attach the two pieces together with duct tape on the inside of the cap. I used four pieces of tape and secured at the two sides, top and bottom.

  4. Cut several pieces string to make the tassel (I used twine) and tie together with a small piece at the top. Then attach to the top middle of the cap with a pieces of tape.

  5. Decorate how you see fit.

*When you go to put the cap on, secure around the sides and back with a few bobby pins.
